International Women’s Day Webinar

March 8, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm UTC+3

Despite making up over 60% of the East African Community, women continue to be marginalised in some sectors of the workforce and decision-making processes. They have limited access to education, finance, information and communication technologies in comparison to their male counterparts. At the same time, they play a significant role in the economic, social and political development of the region. This is mainly through their activities as producers of goods and services, family caregivers and first educators of children.

Since its founding, the Aga Khan University has been working to empower women through education and healthcare by providing them with the skills they need to be active citizens and leaders of the future.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2021, this webinar will explore how Dr Eunice NdiranguDr Njoki Chege and Dr Hilda Nabiswa – all part of the AKU community and women in key leadership positions – have been drivers of positive change in their societies by supporting and promoting gender equity. Moderated by Ms Gladys Gachanga, the panelists will share their insights into the pivotal role of women in East Africa in the years ahead. In particular, their role in civil society and other crucial areas such as health, education and media. They will also discuss how challenges can be moments of growth and opportunity.
