East Africa has diverse legacy media driven by rapid technological developments that have seen greater use of smartphones in the region. In these reports that analyzed the East African media landscape along the five media viability indicators of Politics, Economics, technology, Content and Community by DW Akademie, it is clear that the structural and societal conditions in East Africa suggest an overall media viability trend that has not been too favorable in the last years. The report found that East Africa’s NMOs are likely to face increased obstacles in producing high-quality journalism from external factors such as political, economic, and social conditions in the near term. Understanding these trends is critical to helping policy makers, industry leaders and journalists identify places where policy changes can support improved news media viability.
